Jeffrey David Sachs (; born November 5, 1954) is an American economist and director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University. Sachs was an adviser to Russia and many Eastern European governments during their transitions from communism to market-based societies in 1990s. During this period, Sachs became perhaps the best known proponent for rapid transition policies for which he coined the term, "shock therapy. [1]
